Build a Workout Mix: Successful Mix 6

If you’re not sure what this is about, start by heading HERE and reading the introduction to this section of my blog.

This mix is an altered version of Successful Mix 5 which can be found HERE

1. Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Peas

2. We R Who We R – Ke$ha

3. Crazy In Love – Beyonce

4. Poison – Bell Biv Devoe

5. Chariots of Fire – Vangelis

6. IT’S SHOWTIME!! – B’z

7. Du Hast – Rammstein

8. Gone Away – The Offspring

Its been a MONTH since my last workout post! The lesson here is that sickness is the absolute enemy to working out. I actually ran this mix a month ago, then got sick before I could write about it. Ran the mix again a few weeks later and then again was sick. I finally ran this mix for a third time last night and I’m finally getting a chance to sit down and write about it after throwing “A Feast for Crows” across the room to stop myself from reading it long enough to work this up. (See my Current Obsession)

Obviously if you remember Successful Mix 5, much here has changed. If things are working, I’d like to add lots of new stuff so that the lists will continue to build and you in turn will have more tools to work with. The only songs that remain are “IT’S SHOWTIME!!” and “Du Hast” which have been moved to the latter half of the mix.

We start off with Warm Up “Boom Boom Pow” which worked perfectly for me. Each verse adds a bit to this ever changing futuristic beat. My body was constantly being pushed to run a little bit harder and a little bit faster which is EXACTLY what you want from a Warm Up. Plus that moment where Fergie asks Will.I.Am. to drop the beat pushed me into a frenzied dash. And excellent warm up for anyone more interested in electronic sounding music. I’ll also point out that I used the 4 minute radio edit rather than the 5 minute album version.

Continuing with the electronic theme, I rolled right into We R Who We R” for my first stride. The song just has this pulsing driving beat that works perfectly. Ke$ha is definitely a hate it or love it kind of pop star so if you dont like Ke$ha, definitely dont add this to a mix. If you love Ke$ha, this song could actually work as both a Warm Up (cause it will get your blood pumping) or as a Burnout (cause Ke$ha love has an huge intensity about it!

Rounding out the electronic theme of this opening fast paced mix is Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love”. Just like Ke$ha, I think a love for the artist goes a long way in making her songs work for Burnouts. That being said, the horns that make up the back bone of “Crazy In Love” should propel anyone forward for that extra push. I ran to this a couple times and every single time, the horns shamed be into running that extra mile. How can you slow down with those blaring in your ears?

My second stride for the run is the amazing “Poison”. I absolutely cannot listen to this song and not picture Mac from Always Sunny doing karate chops in the Dance-Off episode. Seriously go find that video if you’ve never seen it. The repetitive drum beat kept me moving at a constant place for its entire four minute length while the different vocalists and playful nature of the song keeps your mind occupied along with your body.

This song was literally made for running to! I mean thats what the movie is about right? I will say that I still associate this song most with Will Ferrell doing is acrobatics in Old School. A perfect Warm Up because not only does it build at a soft slow pace, it motivates your psyche. Its very important that you listen to music that almost forces you to want to win and succeed because otherwise theres nothing stopping you from quitting. To be honest, making this your alarm when you wake up the mornings you plan to run couldnt hurt.

IT’S SHOWTIME!!” and “Du Hast” I’ve already spoke about and each song still served me well near the end of my run.

Finally, I selected “Gone Away” for my cool down. I really wanted to use this song for a stride or burnout but it wasnt well paced enough for the former and not energetic enough for the latter. I think it works well as a cool down because it has that end of the movie feeling to it. There’s an element of exhaustion in the delivery that coincides well with those final walking minutes after a long run. If you still have breathe, feel free to sing along!

So thats it for this long delay mix post! Hopefully the next one wont need another month to go up. Im sure my belly is hoping the same.

Current Obsession 06/15/13: Yeezus

I have no words! And yet I must talk about this! I was gonna be good and wait till Tuesday for the album to release but I just couldnt wait and I am just overwhelmed with how beyond compare this album really is! This is the album I’ve been waiting for. I’ve actually been pretty down on new music in the last year or so. While there have been some great albums, I couldnt find anything that really revolutionized the soundscape once again. I pinned all my hopes on this years “Random Access Memories” by Daft Punk and I came away sorely disappointed. While I dont think it was a bad album, I just felt like it was an album that looked back on the history of music rather than stretching its bounds into new territory. “Yeezus” is basically Kanye’s song “Monster” stretched to album length blended with 808’s and Heartbreaks, Nine Inch Nails, These New Puritans and Daft Punk. The music is ingenious, beautiful, heart wrenching, ear splitting and terrifying! It’s Kanye’s darkest work and also maybe his best. The opening seconds of “On Sight” assault your brain with a crushing beat produced by… Daft Punk! The album continues from its aggressive introduction with an onslaught of crushing beats over Kanye hating on everything and everyone with just the right amount of absurdity and tongue in cheek(ish) Kanye flare. “Black Skinhead”, “I am A God”, “New Slaves”. Each song just keeps upping the ante as Kanye tops himself again and again. When the album does finally begin to slow down during the second half, Kanye’s now familiar autotune croon of 808’s and “Runaway” takes over this time backed by everything from Billie Holiday samples to gently stroked grand pianos to blaring horns. No moment on  the album is wasted with constant new sounds and ideas sending shockwaves through your brain as it tries to grasp the sheer amazement of the sounds coming into you ears. I’ve only heard the album once but all I want to do is dive back in and hear it a hundred more times. I can guarantee this will be playing constantly in my car this summer as I dive deeper. This album is not to be missed.

Build a Workout Stride: Rammstein – Du Hast

Industrial Metal and specifically Rammstein music lends itself VERY WELL to the strideStrides are all about keeping a steady pacing which is most easily found in dance music. Metal rhythms are also great because a good guitar riff works much the same way. “Du Hast” works to combine these two elements into something great. The metal side adds lots of little guitar flourishes to keep your brain occupied and the dance side adds little digital noises like at 2:04. I must also mention that the drums are beast!

Build a Workout Mix: Successful Mix 5

If you’re not sure what this is about, start by heading HERE and reading the introduction to this section of my blog.

This mix is an altered version of Successful Mix 4 which you can find HERE

1. One-Winged Angel (orchestral version) – Nobuo Uematsu

2. Du Hast – Rammstein

3. IT’S SHOWTIME!! – B’z 2003

4. Aaj Ki Raat – A R Rahman

5. My Body Is A Cage – Arcade Fire

6. Totalimmortal – AFI

7. Baby Boy – Beyoncé

8. Path Vol 2 – Apocalyptica

9. Aint No Sunshine – Bill Withers

10. Down to the River to Pray – Alison Krauss

The first thing you’ll notice about this mix is that it is LONGER! It’s a good idea that you constantly push yourself to run further and faster. To run longer, obviously you want to add more songs but you also want to have more strides since this is the portion where you can gain some steady productivity. Faster requires more burnouts to encourage you to run your hardest. Lets look at the changes.

I started off with a new warm up. Most people who know “One-Winged Angel” would immediately think of burnout. The final boss music for one of the most beloved videogame villain of all time. I chose the lighter orchestral version specifically so that I could use it as a warm up. The song does have a slowly progressive nature as it spins and winds toward something grander. This allowed my body to start off at a gentler pace and slowly work my way faster. It never got me running at top speed but it definitely prepared me for the additional ten minutes on the end of this run.

Continuing this so far all new mix, we have a new burnout in the form of B’z’s all caps “IT’S SHOWTIME!!” How can a song with a title in all caps and two exclamation points not be a burnout? This song was used a lot in Japan for national sporting events and even the 2004 Olympics. The song was specifically made to ramp you up and thats exactly what it does!

I was then treated to ANOTHER new stride! Here’s another from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. “Aaj Ki Raat” is a monster of a stride topping out at over 6 minutes! It kept me going with its simple danceable beat and trance inducing singers mesmerizing me for the entire time. So pretty!

We finally get to some familiar ground with the newly located “My Body is a Cage” warm up which I absolutely loved in my last run and couldnt bear to part with yet.

This was followed by two other recent staples, the burnout Totalimmortal” and the stride Baby Boy” which both continue to succeed completely. I was definitely getting tired by the time I got to “Baby Boy” and thought I’d slow to a walk. The beat was so good I had to keep running for another four minutes!

“Path Volume 2” by Apocalyptica is one of the rare occasions where the band is accompanied by a singer. This song blew my mind the first time I heard it years ago and I knew it would work perfectly as a burnout. I mentioned how tired I was at the beginning of “Baby Boy” and this point I was ready to collapse. The haunting vocals and insane chugging cellos made it impossible for me to slow down and there I was off sprinting all over again!

Wow. What a beautiful cool down! Bill Withers sexy voice and thumping guitar slowed me way down so that I could stretch out my sore muscles walking the last couple minute of my workout in perfect bliss.

“Aint No Sunshine” was originally intended to finish off the mix. This leads to another lesson for a successful mix: ALWAYS CARRY SOME BACKUPS! In this case, my legs just werent ready to stop walking. They were really tensing up and cramping and I needed another couple minutes to walk it off. Thankfully I always pack some spares so I simply pulled out this wonderful acapella spiritual that I first heard on the O’Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack and walked off those extra couple minutes in peace. This song is the perfect way to cool down after a long and tiresome run.

66. Nine Inch Nails – Still

This album is probably one of the most controversial albums on this list in terms of it actually being granted album status. First of all, I’ve met many a Nine Inch Nails fan who have never even heard of it. It may also be considered by others to only be half an album because it was included as the second disc of NIN’s 2002 live album And All That Could Have Been. It also happens to mostly be “acoustic” covers of previously released music. All that being said, it is by far my favorite NIN album. With almost all NIN releases, I find a mixed bag. I love half the album and cant stand the other half. My favorite NIN release the Fragile, happens to be a double album and while I love the first half, I cant stand most of the second half which is why it doesn’t appear on the list. So. Why is Still so special? Because it captures a very specific emotion that I sometimes feel and can only get out through a couple of outlets, one being this album. That emotion is a mixture of somewhere between hating the world, hating your current situation and hating yourself for being in the situation to the point where the hatred has exhausted you from hating anything else. It’s a place where even music cant rescue you. Everything you try to put on to quell the pain just sounds derivative or fake. You lie there in pain, unable to move and wanting to cry out against all that is this life but have no voice to do it with. In that very specific state of mind (which I think almost everyone has felt): turning off all the lights, climbing deep into the recesses of your mind and your bed and BLASTING this album at ear splitting levels is the perfect remedy. The album starts of with a certain level of anger and frustration and then slowly dissipates through a series of piano pieces. The album was probably recorded by Trent simply sitting down with a microphone right next to his piano. You can feel the mic vibrating when Trent gets too intense. The piano is so raw that each plunk on a key causes your heart to beat along whether you want it to or not. The drums shake you to the core. The album reminds me of the same peace that comes from crying with your head in your mothers lap. There is a musical “Shhhh. Be at peace.” in play here. Maybe you will listen to this and not get it. But some day, when you’re in that place and you cant find anything desirable to listen to, I want you to put this on and it will keep you alive. It probably wont rescue you or revive you. But it will calm your soul.

What does it make me feel like?

I’m in a glass case of emotion!

What to Listen for Track by Track

Because of the nature of this album for me, I think I should tell a story about my experience with this album rather than the specific moments I love.  I was working hard on a thesis paper that I had to complete for college on my girlfriend’s birthday of all days. She came by to support me while I wrote but my computer was just continually freezing and acting up. The weight of wanting to be done with this thesis and spend time with my girlfriend kept piling up under the stress of getting my laptop to work. I was minutes away from finally finishing this paper that I had poured all the rest of my energy into when the computer finally just completely froze. I was close to the end of my rope already and seeing that frozen computer with my unsaved work on it was the final straw. I held down the control/alt/delete function in an attempt to restart the computer and as it booted up extremely slow and glitchy, I realized it hadn’t saved any of my paper! I punched in the keyboard on my computer with my fist repeatedly banging on it like a savage. Not only did this not fix my issue, it just so happened that my laptop’s hard drive was lying directly beneath my keyboard. Not only did I break my computer, I lost EVERYTHING stored on it over the last 4 years, including personal letters from my girlfriend and the like. The mix of emotions that exploded forth in that moment of realization is hard to pin down. Anger at my computer for not working. The heaviness of knowing I had not only just lost all the hardwork I put in on the paper, but four years of collected digital memories on top of that. The absolute stupidity of my actions. Ruining the rest of my girlfriend’s birthday and whatever plans we had in place. Most of all, the realization and subsequent embarrassment that my girlfriend was sitting right next to me watching every stupid thing I just did and probably thinking what an absolute fool she was dating. I couldn’t look at her. I couldn’t think of anything but pure hatred for everything in life in that moment. She tried to reassure me but I knew there was no escaping this intense ball of human emotions that was fighting to destroy everything I was as a person. I went to my room and she followed. I barely had time to put this album on full volume before diving under my covers and hiding my face in shame in the stupid hopes that hiding my physical self would make me invisible to the world as a whole. My girlfriend just climbed into my bed next to me and held me tight as I tried to drown it all out. Something about this album just stops you from sinking further. When it ended, I wasn’t any closer to solving any of the problems I created. I still had to talk with my girlfriend, and celebrate her birthday, and buy a new computer. But it did something. It stopped me from going completely off the deep end. It soothed me just enough to help me admit my own short comings and step forward afterwards. That is a powerful thing.

76. Rammstein – Mutter

My love of Rammstein is a little bit complicated. Where as most artists on this list I can talk about for hours, I try to know as little about Rammstein as possible. This is partially due to their lyrical content which most of the time is less than appealing. Think torture porn levels of violence and aggression that can show up in the lyrics. (That being said, I do understand that the band is very intelligent and a lot of their lyrics serve as metaphors and are meant to shake you and make you think) However, I got into Rammstein in the infancy of the Internet and listened to the band without the lyrics. For me, the music was always just something I felt, and the vocalist was simply another instrument in the band. There was a time at the beginning of the century where I was heavily into metal and industrial music and Rammstein fed that hunger better than any other band. I love their music because it can provide a huge sense of power while getting work done but at other times can delivery an emotional overload that can break you down in a moment of depression. They also use lots of choral and orchestral elements that I love in my metal. Mutter especially I think, has some of their best musicianship and song writing on it which is how it ended up here. Again if I could describe Rammstein’s music in one word, it would be POWER. Also, Till Lindemann has an amazing voice. One which I don’t think I’ve heard anyone else to have.

What does it make me feel like?

Like I’m an unstoppable general in some war of machines and men in the distant future.

What to Listen for Track by Track

– Mein Hertz Brennt is the perfect album opener. The way it starts with violins and talking. A simple drum beat comes in and then…. “MEIN HERTZ BRENNT!!” and an ASSAULT of orchestra! Then the song uses an acoustic guitar to keep the beat. Is there anyone else making music of this combination?? And the prechorus… the way the strings create that “end of the world” tension before it all comes crashing down in the chorus again! And I must mention the solo at 3:39. Chilling.

– It all starts with marching. Links 2-3-4 has an amazing chorus complete with orchestra but once again, it’s the appearance of acoustic guitars at 1:58 that seal the deal for the song.

Sonne is definitely one of my all time favorite Rammstein songs. I love the countdown that opens the song and appears continually throughout the chorus. I love Till’s vocals on the chorus and the strange backing vocal that accompanies him during the final third of the song.

– The powerful beat of Ich Will is both intoxicating and addicting. Then 2:26 brings the guitars and strange noises in for an amazing bridge.

– The power shows no signs of stopping on the crazy drums of Feuer Frie!, though its highlight is again the soft interlude in the middle of the song.

Mutter finally takes it down a notch for a creepy german metal ballad complete with strings and awesome guitar solo

Nebel definitely takes the album out on a pensive note and the female vocals always give me chills. It has that final song feeling to its chorus that always makes me respect an album.

Example Track

Song of the Day 04/05/11: Nine Inch Nails – Every Day is Exactly the Same

I was singing this to someone in describing how i felt this week and they told me this wasnt a real song. So i played it for them and they said “OH! now it sounds like a real song!” So yeah, maybe im just a bad singer or, it was the delirium of the sickness, or maybe its just that Trent has a way of making things more awesome. Either way, Great song.

Song of the Day 01/29/13: Rammstein – Klavier

Speaking of the late 90’s and early 00’s, I’m a big fan of Rammstein’s work during that time. Rammstein is tough for me because when I listened to it in the 90’s, there wasnt internet access in the way that there is now(Or at least I didnt have a good enough grasp to use it that way). I just listened to the songs in german and had no idea what was being sung. I still loved it and the voice was simply another instrument. It’s not a big surprise but it turns out they wrote a lot of really disturbing lyrics. I still prefer to listen to them without the lyrics because I like to preserve the songs I love the way I perceive them. Not be disturbed by what they are actually about. That being said, I cant help but look up my favorites from time to time. I always knew this song was about a piano. Thats about it. Turns out its about a guy who is obsessed with a piano player and when he finds out that she plays piano not just for him (not sure if thats literal or a metaphor), he kills her. The songs verses describe him sitting at the piano with her  corpse while her family or the police (not sure which) try to get him to unlock the door. See what I mean? I was once told that the way in which the lyrics are written, almost every Rammstein song has a double or triple meaning and that they are very deep and that its a shame I cant speak german. Not so sure I feel that way. Still, I love the song just as much. It always did have a beautiful and creepy vibe even before I knew it’s subject matter.

Song of the Day 01/01/13: Nine Inch Nails – We’re In This Together Now

If you’ve been checking out the blog for the past week, you know that I got engaged on the first of the year. I thought this would be a great song to commemorate the moment. One of my favorite songs of commitment, I love “We’re In This Together Now” because it embraces the dangers of being in a committed relationship and sticking with your loved one through the good times and the bad. The song just has an energy of perseverance in it that I’m sure I’ll need in the coming months as we plan a wedding while being in different parts of the country and juggling 10 other things. I also love the calm piano filled ending. 2013 is going to be an amazing year!

Song of the Day 12/09/12: The Glitch Mob – We Can Make The World Stop

I’ve been loving the Glitch Mob ever since I first discovered them last year and their new single has me really excited for an excellent follow album. I love how “We Can Make The World Stop” feels like Daft Punk meets Justice with a little bit of Mass Effect 3 Soundtrack thrown in. Still the best study music ever according to my sister Hannah.

Song of the Day 11/21/12: ediT – Battling Go-Go Yubari in Downtown L.A.

IF youre into the glitch sound and cant get enough of the Glitch Mob, I definitely recommend you get into the artists’ solo work. They are called the Glitch “Mob” after all. ediT is definitely the closest in sound to the Mob. Battling Go-Go is probably my favorite song by him and I find myself with it on constant repeat. I love the high pitched vocals that show up half way through the track.

Song of the Day 11/01/12: Mindless Self Indulgence – You’ll Rebel to Anything (As Long as It’s Not Challenging)

Ive posted about my love for Mindless Self Indulgence in the past. Mostly I love their insane beats and industrial punk/rap stylings full of non-sensical offend everyone kind of lyrics. It’s kind of like South Park, with the make fun of everything and everyone including yourselves to effectively nullify any real complaints. In a rare instance, this Mindless Self Indulgence song actually has a message that isnt mindless. This is a stab at any group of whiny middle class rich kids who join together to show how messed up their lives are while bonding over common  musical interest (most likely directed at scene kids based on the time of its release. Ok seriously, its directed at scene kids.). I love the lyrics and the insane way the song kind of unwinds over time. To understand what kind of band MSI is, you must also realize that a large part of their fan base, was these exact kind of people. So this isnt a band writing a hate song towards say, teenie boppers who listen to Britney Spears; This was the band actively attacking their own fans. Brilliant. You either love ’em or hate ’em.

Song of the Day 09/14/12 – The Glitch Mob – How To Be Eaten By A Woman

I shared another Glitch Mob track back when I used to post Song of the Day on Facebook.  I really have to get finished posting all the old songs up on this site, so that you have access to more of them.  In the mean time, here is another of my favorites by them.  I love how subtly it builds before that BLAST, at 2:01!  If you can’t listen to this really loud, maybe you shouldn’t even bother.  Another song for those of us without robot ears.

Song of the Day 09/04/12: Snake River Conspiracy – Lovesong

While I’m sure almost everyone has heard “Lovesong” in some form or another… probably never like this.  Unless you’re already familiar with SRC (Snake River Conspiracy).  This song was my coworker’s wedding song (the 311 version), and I told her this is one of my favorite covers.  It sounds like it came straight out of the Matrix.  Haunting female vocals and heavy industrial beats are a huge weakness of mine.  I also like that it evokes a different set of emotional connections,  than the other versions of the song.  It’s definitely sluttier.

Song of the Day 01/22/11: Mindless Self Indulgence – Planet of the Apes

Mindless Self Indulgence is exactly as described. Mindless and ridiculous. ITs completely self indulgent both for the band and the listener. I first listened to them while working at Silver Barn when i was 15 and i would just jam out in the milk room to the whole album and dance around where no one could see me. Its like a music version of south park, and by that i mean that its crass, racist, offends just about everyone, and can be pretty funny. Its important to note the tongue in cheekness of the whole thing. Frankenstien Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy, of which Planet of the Apes is a track, is an extremely addictive album and i really recommend you listen to it in album form, not one track at a time, but since this is a song of the day, i picked one i found particularly catchy and not too dirty. Most songs on the album top out at like 2 minutes but change styles within song, sometimes every 20 or 30 seconds. ITs completely chaotic and yet somehow AMAZINGLY catchy. You’ll find yourself singing along to all the melodies in no time. Its not for everyone, AGAIN, this album can be VERY OFFENSIVE to some. Just wanted to express that. If thats not a problem, go find it right away.

Song of the Day 01/20/11: Skillet – Eating Me Away

I fell in love with Skillet, probably in Junior High.  I loved them for their ferocity and for writing some of my favorite Christian lyrics of all time.  They also weren’t afraid to go against the mainstream and do whatever they felt like, constantly switching musical style.  On their extremely industrial album Alien Youth, they had a song called, “Eating Me Away,” which I fell in love with.  I wrote the lyrics down and put them on the outside of my binder in High School as a constant reminder of how I felt.  My favorite part happens at a minute and 40 seconds, and sounds even better integrated into the rest of the song.  Listening to one song by Skillet really doesn’t do much, since they sound so different album to album, but check ’em out and make sure you grab the lyrics too.  OH and avoid the last album, it sucks.  lol.

Song of the Day 11/30/10: Nine Inch Nails – The Great Below

So yeah, Nine Inch Nails is usually really depressing.  That doesn’t mean it can’t be amazing at what it does.  Of all of NIN’s albums, the one that turned me on to them the most was called Still, an acoustic album by Trent, which is basically him and a piano.  Funny, considering how industrial their sound is.  Naturally, my favorite Album would be the Fragile.  An album that’s dark beyond reason, and yet still comes out hopeful.  “The Great Below”, is just as it’s described, the absolute lowest you can feel.  However, there’s no anger at the bottom, it’s just acceptance.  I think “The Great Below” does an amazing job of capturing what it feels like when you truly hit rock bottom.  I listened to it a lot at one specific period in my life and it helped me to accept my circumstances, and sit in them to contemplate, rather than run to media distractions.  If you’ve been there, then you know what it feels like.  And if you haven’t, then you can’t really imagine, but “The Great Below” will give you a taste.  I wanted to post a different more hopeful song, but for some reason I couldn’t get the haunting power of The Great Below out of my head, so that’s what you get.  Bask in its release from avoidance of pain.

Song of the Day 11/19/10 Part 1: Bjork – Innocence

Sorry I could not get this up last night, but on the brightside, it’s another double friday!  Plus, I’ll be putting up Saturday’s song of the day.

Today picks are a little special.  They aren’t every day listens.  One thing about expanding musical horizons and being a good music collector, is you have to have some things that are really obscure and that make people say “Interesting” or “bizarre,” rather than “oooh, i love this song!”  It’s also fun to be that person who plays the song that literally no one else has heard.  Even better when they haven’t even heard of the band.  The first track is by Bjork.  “Thats not obscure”, you say, “everyone knows Bjork, she wore that swan outfit.”  But ask someone to sing one of her tracks and one of two things will happen… They’ll give you a blank stare, or they’ll actually attempt it and you’ll have to politely ask them to stop.   Let’s face it, 99% of the time Bjork’s music only sounds good when she performs it, not when you do.  What I’m trying to say is, play almost any Bjork track that isn’t commonly known (as in basically all of them) and people will be forced to think.  I recommend “Innocent” because it’s off of her Volta album, which I happen to favor due to the electronic nature of the beats.  Oh, and both of today’s songs are totally car tracks too, cause they have nice bass.
