Song of the Day 08/10/12: hide – Dice

I reconnected with an old friend the other day and we bonded over a shared love of J-Rock.  While she was mostly obsessed with the younger stars and shared a lot of new music with me (which I will probably end up playing here), I encouraged her to check out all the classics.  All those bands that completely influenced modern Japanese rock.  The obvious choices being X Japan and hide.  Hide was the lead guitarist of X Japan, one of the biggest Japanese rock bands of all time, and definitely one of the most influential.  He then started a solo career and became bigger than ever.  Unfortunately, in 1998 he allegedly committed suicide (some say it was an accident), becoming the Kurt Cobain of Japan.  The nation mourned.  If you like his music, definitely read up on his story.  Thankfully, he left us with three amazing full length albums.

“Dice” happens to be one of my favorite hide songs, so I thought I’d share it here.  A word about the video: hide is a rarity.  He could give Lady GaGa a run for her money in the “strange” department.  A word about the song: The highlight for me is the drums.  Most of the time, the drums are an instrument I appreciate in the background.  On “Dice” they BEG to be heard.  I can’t help but imagine the drummer literally breaking his drum sticks on every verse of this song.  It just sounds like he’s slamming them down hard enough to bring down the building!  A fun fact about the album: The mask in the song, and also on the cover of the album, was designed by none other than H. R. Giger!  Cool.
