Song of the Day 12/28/12: Mumford and Sons – Thistle & Weeds

Mumford and Sons is one of those bands where my favorite track changes every couple weeks based on my mood. I think that overall, Thistle & Weeds stands at the top. I was surprised to find that I’d never featured it as a song of the day, so here it is! I know my brother loves when I post Mumford songs since he discovered them through the site. Why is it my favorite? Being raised on progressive metal, it is no secret that one of my favorite things in music is build. Especially when male vocalists jump into a higher vocal range to meet the demands of and ever climbing epic build. Case and point here. Oh and it has dark string portions, followed by horns. My other two major weaknesses in music. So there you have it. Still, this is Mumford so maybe my opinion will change against next week.

Just when Im about to catch up, I go and do a thing like enter the final stages of planning an elaborate surprise proposal to the love of my life and now FIANCE! Im sorry this site has fallen off in that time but I fully intend to bounce back. Though probably not till next week considering Im now spending some time with said fiance in New York.

Song of the Day 10/26/12: Mumford & Sons – Broken Crown

Elaine is a HUGE Mumford fan so naturally we’ve been listening to the album while she’s here. I’m really feeling Broken Crown. I really like those dark folk sounds. Ive always been someone who prefers minor keys to major. I also like the blend of hope and despair. For me banjo always reminds me of hopeful happy songs so I love when it is used the way it is in “Broken Crown.” Oh and need I mention it? There are horns. Every song needs horns…

Song of the Day 09/26/12: Mumford & Sons – Babel

In celebration of the release of Mumford’s new album, I’m posting my favorite track so far.  “Babel” has that perfect blend of harsh sounds, juxtaposed to quieter moments.  And Marcus’ voice really shines, almost reaching a Jack Black style comical growl.  It’s a very fun song.  Favorite line: “Press my nose up to the glass around your heart.”  What a beautiful image.

Song of the Day 01/14/11: Mumford and Sons – Little Lion Man

So Elaine turned me on to Mumford and Sons recently, even though I’d been tempted to look them up a while back.  I dont have much to say so far except that this song is crazy addictive and I love it!  IF you haven’t heard of them before then just picture Nickel Creek, but heavier, younger and rougher.  You haven’t heard of Nickel Creek?  Go back a few days, since I featured their song “Can’t Complain.”
